Wickersley win Plate

Wickersley Vikings claimed the SBL Plate for the scond time in three seasons thanks to a 93-86 victory over Sheffield Starz 1.

The game went back and forth throughout with large scoring runs for both teams altering the balance of the contest.

It was Vikings who started fastest with a 6-0 lead, but 4 threes from Joshua Pollock in the opening quarter saw Starz in front 27-21 at the break.

Wickersley hit back with a 13-2 run early in the second quarter to move ahead only to see Starz go on a 17-0 run to help them towards a 53-43 half-time lead.

Another Pollock three saw Starz ahead 66-59 towards the end of the third, but a 12-2 end to the period from Wickersley saw them establish a narrow lead heading in to the final quarter.

Starz scored eight straight points to lead 78-76 and they were still in front with three minutes to go. Triples from Brynn Cubbin and Matt Holmshaw put Vikings 87-83 in front and although Starz got to within a point Vikings held their nerve from the free throw line to clinch victory.

Matt Wilson led the scoring for Vikings with 36 points, but it was Paul Lockwood who took the MVP award with a 27 point effort. Pollock had 30 points in the first half for Starz and finished with a game-high 40.
